Fierce Gales Cause Tens of Thousands Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents urged to avoid going out as strong winds strike the region.

Intense gusts reaching velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 households experiencing outages and compelled agencies to cancel over 100 air travel services, according to regional news sources.

The gales are affecting the whole southern region and southern parts of the North Island, according to the weather forecasting body.

The nation's agencies have released infrequent red wind warnings - the top caution category - in core zones encompassing these major districts.

Locals have been encouraged to remain inside, avoid travel, and make arrangements for further electricity and network failures.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Response

The electricity loss seems to be impacting residences predominantly in the southern region, while agencies say that the electricity supply was being gradually reinstated.

Domestic outlets have stated that in various locations structures have suffered roof damage, and trees and electricity poles have been knocked down by the gusts.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being struck by a falling limb at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a female was blown onto moving cars on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was recorded in a viral dashcam video.

Flights in and out of the urban area have been cancelled because of the weather, while certain highways and community centers are also closed.

Meanwhile Canterbury officials have declared a crisis declaration, to support recovery activities.

Work Stoppages Alongside Extreme Conditions

The wild winds on today come as tens of thousands of school staff, physicians and civil servants are participating in what has been called a "mega strike", calling for higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

However the extreme weather has pressured them to change some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or called off.

Like conditions are affecting the neighboring country, ushering in a heatwave to the country's outback.

Officials have issued burning restrictions for apprehension regarding bushfires.
