We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard physical horror, but within Together exists a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.
Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The plot begins when the couple move from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.
While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.
The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
The couple confront the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
